Green Transition: Energy Efficiency, Technology and Skilling

As we move towards the 1.5 degree global ambition, industry has taken on a number of actions on areas such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, circular economy. In this session we will hear from industry practitioners about the sustainability planning within the context of energy and resource efficiency. We will discuss the way in which operations of a sustainability plan requires engagement across the supply chain and with all stakeholders. We will also hear from professionals about the way in which academia is building employment opportunities for the new skills that are needed to mainstream sustainability.

Arati has been working on issues of sustainability and policy, for a green transition. Questions of mobility, clean energy solutions, capacity and storage have been central to the work she has been undertaking. Arati is the head of the Secretariat for the Sweden-India, Transport, Innovation and Safety Partnership (SITIS), a strong triple-helix collaboration of industry, academia and government agencies.

Arati started working with environment and natural resources in 2000, in the US, and she has had over 15 years experience of working with sustainable development in the Sweden – India context; working first with Sida’s energy portfolio, and subsequently with the Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi’s Environment Office.

She has worked intensely with e-mobility within the Sweden India corridor and is the author of the report "Electromobility and India, Opportunities for Engagement"

Arati is also the India Country Manager of Recap and sits on the board of URBS (Urban Systems) and Pratham Sweden.

Arati holds a MSc. in Natural Resource Management from SOAS, University of London and a B.A. in International Political Economy from Swarthmore College, PA, USA and the London School of Economics.

Senior academic advisor for the KTH Internationalization in the Prioritized regions of India and Latin America. KTH representative in several projects with Indian partners such as IISc, IITM, Amrita U., Symbiosis International U. and Mysore U. and AID. Responsible for the development and lecturing of an IITM NPTEL course in Machine Learning. Advisor to investors and startups on AI related ventures.

PhD in Knowledge Representation/Artificial Intelligence in 1986. Having held a position in Artificial Intelligence at KTH since 1987, he has lead research and examined more than 30 PhD students in Artificial Intelligence in Machine Learning, Knowledge Representation, Automated Reasoning as well as Intelligent Interfaces. 10 PhDs have eventually become tenured Professors. Chairman of the Swedish AI Society (SAIS), 1990-2000. Honorary President of SAIS. Local organization chair for the International Joint Conference in AI (IJCAI99) in 1999. Cofounder and Director for the center for Cognitive Engineering (KTH and SU) 1990-1995. Responsible for the development of the new KTH five year MSc Program in Information Technology (1999) and its Program Chairman (1999-2005). Vice Dean for the KTH ICT School and Chairman for its Graduate Study and Recruitment Committees 2005-2014. Designer of and Director for the EIT Digital Pan European Master School:2011-2016. Director for the KTH ICT Research Platform: 2009 – 2018.

Arvind Patil is General Manager at Epiroc Nashik Product company. He jointed the Epiroc Group in 1983 as a trainee Engineer, in past 38 years he has witnessed various business transformations, transitions and moved across various Locations and positions vertically and horizontally. 1983 to 2001 he worked for Chicago Pneumatic in Sourcing, in 2001 it became Atlas Copco, Arvind moved to Nashik operations, shouldered responsibilities of Logistics Manager, taken over responsivity Sourcing Manager for setting up all new sourcing team and process for newly acquired business of in Drilling Solutions. In 2011 he was promoted to become Operations manager to establish new production Unit of URE (Underground Rock Excavation) division at Nashik. After a great success of URE establishment, he moved up to shoulder responsibility of 5 divisions at Epiroc Nashik PC as General manager in 2018.
In 38 years of experience, he has gained in-depth understanding of business process and organisations culture, people management, identification, and mitigation of risks. Able to align and optimise business process. He has a belief “Give the world the best you have, and the best will come to you” and he is practical, believes in “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are”

Akilur Rahman is Chief Technology Officer for Hitachi Energy India Limited, leading the technology giant’s core technologies and digitalization strategy and execution for its Power Grids BUsiness in the region. Hitachi Energy is a global leader in power technologies and aspires to be the partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.
With more than three decades of experience, Akilur is an accomplished figure, well-versed with the developments and trends in the power sector. He has held several leadership positions in ABB ranging from Head of Global Automation Product Development and Integration to Global Head of Cyber Security and Engineering in Process Automation and then Head of ABB Corporate Research Center, Bengaluru, where he instilled higher collaboration toward global research and development, engineering and services to develop technology and tools with faster time to market. Prior to his current role he was the Chief Technology Officer for ABB in India.
Akilur began his career in 1989 with ABB as Senior Engineer - System Engineering, Product Dev. and Application and worked his way up the ladder with his sharp acumen, knowledge of power technologies and project management skills. In 2019, he won the title of the 51st Most Impactful Smart Cities Leaders by the World Corporate Social Responsibility Congress.
An active technology thought leadership speaker at various professional body events including India Smart Grid Foundation, CII, IEEE, CIGRE and IEEMA, he has addressed several national and international forums on power and automation, technologies, digitalization and analytics. He has also been a secondee for World Economic Forum’s Fourth Industrial Revolution Center in India. He has presented and published several articles on the future of power and automation technologies.
Akilur has a master’s in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and is certified in general management from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. When he is not discussing or working on future power technologies, he likes to unwind with music and some family time.
